I'm old school when it comes to the physical act of list building. Being a writer by trade, I'm a pen and paper sort of guy, so all of my lists are actually put down on paper and added up without even using a calculator (though I always run them through a calculator before committing a list to a game). I find this process of writing a list down one of my favorite aspects of the wargaming hobby. It's something to do with the interaction between lists, paper, pen, and brain.

Today's game ended up being a Desperate Measures match-up with Steve running a Hetzer Panzerkompanie and me running a Hero Motostrelkovy.
Steve's army was 2x Hetzer Platoons (4x tanks), a Beute Panzer platoon of 4x T-34/76, 2x Panzer II Luchs patrols (3x tanks each), and a battery of three Nebelwerfers.
I ran essentially the same list I used against Patrick a few weeks ago, but swapped the AA trucks for three BA-64s.
We rolled up No Retreat, and as I'm a Mechanised Company, I "got" to defend. As a side note, I hate defending. I'm not one to sit in my trenches and let things happen to me. I'm just not cut out to put together a solid defense line and have it hold. I much prefer to get up in there and be erosion itself, rather than be the one eroded. But, them's the breaks when you take a mechanised company: sometimes you gotta defend.

Now, my first inclination was to try the tanks. I'm a sucker for the Type 89 as it looks so brilliantly awkward with its tall frame and it's door in the front. But I quickly remembered a promise I made over six years ago. Several months before I knew I was going to move to New Zealand, I promised myself that the first Japanese force I would paint is a Special Naval Landing Force (SNLF) company. Remembering that made me so intensely desire an SNLF force, that I immediately purchased a Hohei Chutai (JBX01) box, two platoons of HMGs (JP704), a pack of Nikuhaku teams (JP706), and two boxes of Light Sensha Platoons (JBX03).

We decided to test out Patrick's Snapshot list that he has been working on, SS-Kampfgurppe Spindler. For my part, the upcoming release of Desperate Measures had me excited to play a Hero Motostrelkovy Batalon. The points were set at 1575 and neither of us knew what the other was taking.
